Other Water-Based Licenses

If you intend to spend a lot of time out on the water, I suggest three other areas to look into:

  • Sailing Schools
  • SCUBA
  • FCC license (MROP, Amateur "Ham" Radio, and Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit)

Sailing Schools are essential if you want to learn how to sail, have no prior experience, or no friends to "show you the ropes."

Two organizations come immediately to mind:

  • American Sailing Association
  • United States Sailing Association

Either one will guide you through a learning process enabling you to learn how to sail, and then permit you -upon their certification- to charter boats form their respective organizations.

SCUBA diving is a great addition to your sailing activities:  In the summer you "glide below" and while cooling off, you also visit a world you'd otherwise never would have seen.

The premier world-wide organization on diving is most definitely PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors).  Check it out, and you won't regret it!

Finally, there is one other tool that I can highly recommend:  It lets all your family & friends track where you are (sailing and/or flying), you can let them know that you're doing fine, and in case of emergency you can also send for help.  It is a satellite based unit, no bigger than an old cell-phone from the late 90s!  Get all the data you need on their site, and it is called a "Spot GPS Satellite Messenger."

Finally [the "real" finally of this page  :)] I'd like to point out that I have no commerical or financial incentive suggesting you buy anything that I put on this site - it is all based on my personal experiences and conversations with friends and colleagues over the years!

If you got to the American Radio Relay League, you can find some pointers as to where & how to get started with a "Ham License."
